Flèche Wallonne: Beneath the expectations

Flèche Wallonne: Beneath the expectations

8 minutes was the maximal advantage of the early breakaway at the Flèche Wallonne (1.WT, 30/09). So the last escapee, Mauri Vansevenant, was only caught during the final kilometers. As traditional, the race was only decided on the last passage of the Mur de Huy. After 202 kilometer, Marc Hirschi was crowned as the winner. Jan Bakelants and Maurits Lammertink finished 34th and 38th.

Jan Bakelants:
« I felt good, but apparently the whole peloton had good legs. The final was very fast, so I think the Tour de France played its role. The level was high, unfortunately I have to conclude that I wasn't able to play a role. I blame myself for the positioning going into the final climb. Liège-Bastogne-Liège suits me somewhat better, so I expect to be at the front at the key moments next Sunday. »
