Paris Nice (2) - Doubey : "Continuer my performances"

Paris Nice (2) - Doubey : "Continuer my performances"

The second stage of Paris-Nice (2.WT, 8-15/03) moved away from the urban area of Paris in the direction of Loiret. The sun brightened the start zone in Chevreuse, inspiring two riders to attack at the beginning of the stage. The duo passed the first climbs of the day in the lead, but with the wind blowing in the open fields in Loiret, the peloton increased its pace, catching the leaders with 60 kilometer to go until the finish line in Chalette-sur-Loing. Andrea Pasqualon (29th) won the sprint of the third group, 36 seconds behind winner of the day Giacomo Nizzolo. Doubey finished 40th in the group with Pasqualon and is now 19th in the general classification. On Tuesday the peloton will leave Chalette-sur-Loing in the direction of La Châtre for a 212.5 kilometer sprint stage.

Fabien Doubey :

« It was again a nervous day because of the wind, the rain and the cold. The breakaway never had more than 3 minutes of advantage, and Bora worked to bring the breakaway back with 60 kilometer to go. We knew that the course was exposed to the wind and that there was a risk of crosswinds. Unfortunately I was caught behind the crash of Quintana. With Andrea Pasqualon we tried to bridge the gap to the first group, but we never came closer than 50 meter from them. We limited the damage. »

« I'm very happy about my feeling, which is getting better day by day. Another nervous day is awaiting us. Afterwards, we'll have to listen to our legs in the time trial and in the climbs. I'm confident, and I can't wait for the battle in the climbs! But we need to stay concentrated for tomorrow's stage, and stay in the front as good as possible. The positioning isn't easy in a World Tour race, but I want to continue my good performances. »

Hilaire Van der Schueren (sports director) :

« This is Paris-Nice ! I'm here for the 20th or 25th time already and the ingredients remain unchanged; wind, open fields and crosswinds! Tomorrow we can expect another similar day, then a time trial before the race profiles become more hilly. Until now, we've done well. Today we've got four riders in the first groups. No, not in the first group. But the level is very high. »

« I'm happy to be present here to prepare the next races. Doubey and Pasqualon finished in the second big bunch, loosing 36 seconds. When you finish with Teuns, Gilbert or Benoot, it wasn't too bad! Luckily we escaped the crashes, because it was very nervous. Pasqualon also showed his capabilities for the rest of the week in the sprint. »
