Tour de France (15): Offensive Martin and Meurisse climb in the top 20 in GC

Many riders showed their enthusiasm to be part of the early breakaway in stage 15 in the Tour de France (2.UWT, 6-28/7), which began at a very high pace. A 36 rider group managed to create a gap after the first race hour, while climbing the Col de Montségur, the first categorized climb of the day. Guillaume Martin was in the mix, like the day before. However, the collaboration in the front group was not optimal, and the breakaway split in two parts.

Finally only one of the escapees, Simon Yates, was strong enough on the final climb Prat d'Albis to stay ahead of the battle between the GC riders. Xandro Meurisse had to let go the favourites on this last climb, and also Guillaume Martin was caught and left behind. The French climber finished at the 15th place at 2 minutes behind winner Yates. Meurisse reached the finish line 1.5 minutes later, at the 22nd place. The Wanty-Gobert duo climbs into the top 20 in the provisional general classification, one day ahead of the second rest day.

Guillaume Martin:

« It was not an easy task to join the early breakaway. I tried several times, but the pace as high and there were many candidates. I was happy to finally be part of it. I managed the climbs as good as possible, knowing I usually feel better and better during this kind of stages. I was a little frustrated until our arrival in the Pyrenees, because I didn't show my good feeling in a breakaway yet. I like an offensive spirit, so I was happy to show this the last two days. Simon Yates was unreachable, I didn't have the legs to win today. I didn't show extraordinary performances yet, but I'm satisfied with how my Tour de France is progressing. Now it is time for rest, although we have a long four hour transit ahead! »
