Terrible weather conditions do not stop Veuchelen

Again a very hard and cold day today in Tour de Romandie (2.WT, 25-30/04). Temperatures below 5°C and a lot of rain/snow during the stage. The stage from Champéry to Bulle was shortened due to snow in Champéry. The peloton had to ride 136km instead of 160km. Frederik Veuchelen was in the 4-men breakaway from the start. Sander Armée had to let go his companions with 20 km to go. Fre lost contact with only 3km to go. Stefan Küng won the stage before Grivko. The peloton caught Frederik in the last km. Andrea Pasqualon finishes 15th in the sprint of the pack, Dion Smith 17th.

Frederik Veuchelen:

“We went into the offensive from the start of the race. Our cooperation was very smooth and we build up an advantage of more than five minutes. I started to believe when we still had more than four minutes with 30km to go. When Andrei Grivko accelerated I couldn’t react anymore. My legs were empty after a very cold and wet day. I was caught by the pack with 800 meter to go.”

“I am very disappointed. If I would have been able to hold on a little longer a podium spot would have been mine. That would have been a great reward for me and the team. But we will continue to try! I want to go into the offensive another time in the next days. Hopefully our climbers can show something too in the mountains!”
