TDF (14): Martin: "Good to anticipate before the Tourmalet"

The individual time trial behind the back, the peloton started the 14th stage of the Tour de France (2.UWT, 6-28/7) in Tarbes, 117.5 kilometer away from the finish on top of the Tourmalet. Guillaume Martin joined the early breakaway of 17 riders, shortly after the official start. The front group gained a maximum advantage of 3 minutes. The pace was kept high in both the breakaway as in the peloton, as both had their eye on the stage victory. Guillaume Martin was caught by the peloton during the Col du Soulor, a first category cilmb. He followed until the slopes of the Tourmalet and had to let go when last escapee, Elie Gesbert, was caught by the group of favourites with 10 kilometer to go. The favourites battled until the top, with Thibaut Pinot claiming the victory. Guillaume Martin finished 22nd, more than 4 minutes behind his compatriot. He climbs to 21st position in the provisional general classification, while Xandro lost some positions to take 27th place provisional. Another mountain top finish awaits the riders this Sunday, at the end of the 15th stage from Limoux to de Prat d'Albis in Foix.

Guillaume Martin:

« It was an ideal situation for me to be part of the early breakaway and to anticipate, because as often in a short and explosive stage, I didn't feel great. These tactics allowed me to follow the favourites without problems. After the fast start, I felt better on the Tourmalet, which I climbed on my own rhythm. Today was one of my less good days, so in these circumstances it is not bad to finish in 22nd place. It was a  difficult day, I hope the next days I feel better. »
