Saudi Arabia (4): Doubey stranded with 3km to go

The temperatures rose for this fourth day at the Tour of Saudi Arabia (7/02, 2.1). Four riders formed an early breakaway in this 137 kilometer stage between Wadi Namar Park and the Al Mazuhimiya King Saud University. The peloton used the strong crosswinds to create echelons. Fabien Doubey and four other riders joined the leaders on the last climb of the day. The French rider joined forces with Rui Costa, but the two last escapees were caught by the bunch with 3 kilometer to go. Nacer Bouhanni took his first win of the season, and also the race lead. Timothy Dupont was hindered by a crash in the final kilometer and finished 29th. Fabien Doubey is in 16th position in the provisional general classification before the last stage of 144 kilometer on Saturday.

Fabien Doubey:

«  I showed my good form in today’s hilly stage, although we also had to be alert for crosswinds. We stayed at the front with the team, and I followed the moves on the climbs in the final. We didn’t join the early breakaway before the bonification sprints, but I continued the effort with Rui Costa until we were caught with 2,5 kilometer to go. Two riders against three teams leading the peloton with a headwind, it was a difficult mission. There’s one stage left tomorrow, suited for sprinters. We’ll again have to be attentive for crosswinds and the battle for bonifications. »
