Paris-Nice (1): Good positioning of an attentive Doubey

Paris-Nice (1): Good positioning of an attentive Doubey

Paris-Nice started this Sunday around Plaisir. The Race towards the Sun started... in the pouring rain! A duo lead the race, but was caught halfway through the race. Danny Van Poppel didn't feel well and abandoned the race. The crosswinds animated the stage, assembling the strongest riders at the front. Before the first passage in Plaisir, a group of twenty riders created a gap, but the last time climbing Neauphle-le-Château was decisive. Schachmann joined race leaders Alaphilippe and Benoot, before winning the stage. Fabien Doubey rode attentively and finished in the first group, 15 seconds behind the winner. The French rider was the only representant in the first group and is in a good position for the general classification. On Monday, the second stage will bring the peloton from Chevreuse to Chalette-sur-Loing on 185 kilometers of rather flat roads.

Fabien Doubey :

« As expected, the wind played a major role in this first stage. The weather conditions got worse during the stage. I was in the last group at the first moments of crosswinds. Luckily, we came back and I went to a better position approaching smaller roads. So I was in the first group when it splitted again. I've given all I had on the last climb to follow. I'm happy about my result, and I'm in a good position for the general classification. The level of difficulty of the stages goes crescendo towards the end of the week.»
