Good Paris-Roubaix for Wanty-Gobert

Good Paris-Roubaix for Wanty-Gobert

Paris-Roubaix was again very fast despite a strong headwind. A lot of attacks happened, o.a. from De Winter, Vallée and Devriendt, before the first big breakaway after around 70 km race. Frederik Backaert placed himself in a 23-men group heading to the first cobble sections of the day. A reduced bunch came back before Arenberg including Dupont, Devriendt and Kreder. Kreder accelerated before cobble section 17 and Philippe Gilbert came back with the favorites in Beuvry-la-Forêt. Finally, Backaert is our best finisher with a 26th position in Roubaix.

Frederik Backaert :

« It was a long fight for the breakaway. I only tried once, but it was the good one. First we were with 9 riders, later a second group came back and it was full gas all day long. I was happy to be in front because it was less nervous between the cobble sections. Finally, the bunch came back just before Arenberg. We were always in good position as a team. Wesley attacked with Gilbert and the race was open. I felt quite good until 10 km from the finishline. I was totally dead and I lost around 10 places in the final. It’s a pity because I could have finished in top 15. But I had really good legs so it is positive heading to Brabantse Pijl, Tour du Finistère and my favorite race Tro Bro Léon. »

Hilaire Van der Schueren (sports director) :

« The guys did a good job. From the start we were in the good flow. Our guys could long fight with the favorites, it is really positive. We maybe attacked too much from the start and it was costly at the end. But we were not sure the guys would be able to ride the final so we had to try early. So I am happy about our Paris-Roubaix. »

« I am really happy the cobble classics are done. I must admit the last weeks were not that easy. We hoped for more but we were unlucky. We miss Yoann Offredo during all Spring classics, Pieter Vanspeybrouck did not race Flanders because he became father, Aime De Gendt had to cancel Paris-Roubaix because of an injury, … I am confident for the next days, with Paris-Camembert, Brabantse Pijl, Tour du Finistère and Tro Bro Leon where we can claim good results. »
