Dauphiné (5) - Martin again top 10: "Tomorrow is a special day"

The fifth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné (2.WT, 03-10/06) started with a climb! A breakaway of nine riders accelerated quickly on Côte de Naysord. Wanty-Groupe Gobert stayed attentively in the peloton. The leading group was caught on the first kilometers of the Valmorel climb. Guillaume Martin, well placed from the foot, climbed with the best riders. He finished 26 seconds behind winner Daniel Martin. In the general classification Martin advances to the 22nd position. This Saturday the finish is at the top of La Rosière, a climb where Martin won in Tour de l'Avenir in 2015.

Guillaume Martin:

"I did not perform bad again today. I climbed between the strongest and finish top 10. However, it was not the kind of stage I prefer: short, with a smooth climb and at the end a slightly flatter final. I prefer the steeper climbs. In addition my legs were a little less strong than yesterday. But I still have to be satisfied! It is encouraging to see the riders in whose company I finish. "

"This Saturday will be a special day for me for two reasons: on the one hand because the stage is similar to a stage of the Tour de l'Avenir which I won in the U23 category. And it is my birthday tomorrow, so I have two good reasons to get a good result. Although I do not need to motivate myself! The best gift would obviously be a stage win, but the competition is big. "

Hilaire Van der Schueren:

"Guillaume Martin is at his place. He is certainly not 100%, but that is normal since we are seven weeks before the last week of the Tour. The arrival was probably not the most favorable for him, because of lack of high percentages. We'll see how he performs tomorrow, even though we can lose 20 minutes in a bad day. "

"Today the whole team worked well, with Xandro also riding well. Minnaard is going better, and Degand is doing his job as team captain. The whole group placed Guillaume perfectly at the foot. It will not be easy to make the selection for the Tour. With a combination of riders for the flat and mountain stages. But I prefer such a luxury situation with more choices than the opposite. "
