Dauphiné (1) : Doubey : "A good introduction"

The 71th edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné (2.WT, 9-16/06) was opened this Sunday in Aurillac. The routes in Cantal required warm muscles, with the Puy Mary climb after 30 kilometer. The French man Fabien Doubey took position in the early six man breakaway with Naesen, Eg Cort Nielsen, Vermote and Pedersen. Finally he had to bow his head in the second and final time climbing Roquenatou, with some points for the mountain classification in his pocket. A reduced peloton battled for the stage victory after 142 kilometer in Jussac. Boasson Hagen won, with Martin (13e), Eiking (17e) and Meurisse (24e) finishing in the peloton. Wanty-Gobert was the best in the team classification. The second stage on Monday with cross the Auvergne from Mauriac to Craponne-sur-Arzon in 180 kilometer.

Fabien Doubey :

« I was happy to be part of the breakaway, as was asked in the briefing. The breakaway was composed of big names, so I immediately thought that, unless a maximum advantage of 3 minutes, it might be possible to stay ahead for a long time in the flat sections. The likes of Pedersen, Cort Nielsen, or Naesen rode strongly on the flat. I had to dig deep very often, but I let Naesen's experience guide me and I found my second wind back in the climbs. »

« I was caught by the peloton during the last climb, afterwards I tried to manage the final as good as possible. I tried to win as most points for the mountain jersey as possible. Now I am third in this classification it might become a goal. But first I need to recover well, because the day was action packed in the front. It is a good introduction to the Dauphiné, both for me and for the team. »
