Burgos (1): Martin 7th on Alto del Castillo in the opening stage

The Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC, 13-17/08) was opened by a 162 kilometer stage around Burgos. A five rider group took a maximum advantage of 4 minutes in the Spanish open areas. The final, more explosive with a double passage of the Alto del Castillo, suited the punchers. The finish on the uplands of Burgos smiled to Giacomo Nizzolo. Guillaume Martin, back in competition after the Tour de France, finishes 7th on Alto del Castillo. The 155 kilometer second stage from Gumiel de Izan to Lerma, this Wednesday, is more flat.

Guillaume Martin :

« I had some difficulties to get back in the rhythm during the beginning of the stage, as expected after two weeks out of competition. But my feeling got better as the kilometers passed and I was ready for an explosive final. I made a mistake in a cobbled corner with 500 meters to go, and I prefer longer and steeper efforts, but I was in the mix with the best. I really want to thank my teammates, who helped me well today. I was particularly impressed by the work of our young trainee Théo Delacroix, who was strong today. CC Etupes is a good development team, so I was only partly surprised. But he's proven a good mentality. A nice week of racing awaits us! »
