Britain (5): Meurisse approaches the top 10, before the ITT

Loïc Vliegen didn't make it to the startline in Birkenhead for the fifth stage in the Tour of Britain (2.HC, 07-14/09) because of stomach and intestinal complaints. Four riders led the race for a long time, with the last escapee being caught on the last climb of the day, less than 5 kilometer before the finish. The calm in the peloton during this rather flat stage was interrupted by a crash, in which Boris Vallée was involved. The Belgian rider came out of it with abrasions and body aches and was able to continue to the finishline in Birkenhead Park. Dylan Groenewegen won the bunch sprint with a big advantage in this first public funded park in the world and completed a hattrick. Xandro Meurisse finished 18th and climbs to the 13th place in the provisional general classification, one day ahead of the 14.4 kilometer individual time trial in Pershore.
