Britain (4): Meurisse 7th on Beast Banks

The fourth stage in the Tour of Britain (2.HC, 07-14/09), with start along the banks of the river Tyne in Gateshead, promised to be a hard day. Three riders combined their forces to ride across from east to west in this 173.2 kilometer stage. The demanding course caused thinning in both the breakaway and the peloton. The, in the mean time, lone leader Van Baarle, was overrun on the last categorized climb of the day by the skimmed peloton, which created a spectacle in the final.

Finally, three escapees started the Beast Banks uphill finish in Kendal first, before they were passed by the forefront of the peloton, with stage winner and new GC leader Mathieu Van der Poel and Xandro Meurisse, 7th in the stage. The Belgian rider climbs to 15th position in the provisional general classification.
