Binck Bank Tour (1): Dupont sprints to 6th place in the opening stage

The opening stage in the Binck Bank Tour (2.UWT, 12-18/08), the only World Tour stage race in the low countries, was ridden in the Waasland region. The flat stage was ridden following a classic scheme, with an early breakaway of four riders being caught in the final, unless the presence of rain and wind in the open areas in the polder landscape. Sam Bennett took the victory in Hulst, and first leader's jersey, after 167 kilometer flirting with the Belgian-Dutch border. Timoty Dupont finished 6th and is in 9th position in the provisional general classification. Another flat stage awaits the riders on Tuesday at the Belgian coast, from Blankenberge to Ardooie.

Timothy Dupont:

« The approach to the sprint was fast, but I followed teammate Wesley Kreder to a perfect position in Dylan Groenewegen's wheel. I lost my rhythm in the fight for positions, and I found free space for sprinting to the victory or a podium sport a little too late. I felt powerful during the last meters, which is promising for the next days. The stage passes in my city, Gistel, during the stage tomorrow. I managed to sprint to a place of honour in this stage last year, so I'm looking forward to repeat tis tomorrow. I'm very satisfied about my new CUBE Litening C68:X PRO bike, a big improvement for flat stages like these. »
