Austria - Eiking and Backaert open strong in Feldkirch

Six riders rode a long time in front of the peloton in a hilly opening stage of the Tour of Austria (2.1, 07-14 / 07) with start and finish in Feldkirch. Because of the dangerous arrival passage, the time for the general classification was recorded at three kilometers from the finish. Odd Eiking and Frederik Backaert threw themselves into the battle for the stage victory of the day after the break was caught. Matej Mohoric created a small gap in the final full of tricky corners, Eiking and Backaert sprinted in the city center to fifth and seventh spot in the day's results. A promising performance with a view on the coming days.

Frederik Backaert:

"I felt strong today. I was well placed in the final and felt that a victory was even possible. I could have been on the podium today. A rider from Roompot made a maneuver in the last descent and again in the last hectometres. That meant we had to brake fully and I thus lost a second or third place. "

Odd Eiking:

"I felt that I had a chance of winning today, but Backaert and I had brake on a crucial moment in the last kilometer. Suddenly a wave of riders passed by. But the feeling is good. That is promising for the upcoming days. "
