Austria (1) : Vanspeybrouck again on the podium

Austria (1) : Vanspeybrouck again on the podium

The Tour of Austria (2.1, 6-12/07) mapped out a first stage in line, this Sunday, from Griskirchen to Freistadt. The final circuit containing a climb had to be looped three times, before finishing on a road with a slight slope. The sprint, disturbed by a crash, was won by the Spanish rider Barbero, ahead of Liepins and Pieter Vanspeybrouck. Our Belgian sprinter climbs to the second position in the general classification, behind the new leader Liepins. Jérôme Baugnies, in difficulty, had to abandon the race. This Monday, the second stage wil go from Zwettl to Wiener Nuestadt in 179 selective kilometers.

Pieter Vanspeybrouck :
« It was not an easy stage. We arrive with a group of 70 riders for the sprint. I felt good in the climbs, and the team worked well. Tom Devriendt brought me into an excellent position in the last kilometer, finishing his job with 300 meters to go. It is a pity, it was so close and I missed out on wearing the leader's jersey. »

« I'm disappointed, but tomorrow and on Thursday, two more opportunities for sprint finishes are awaiting us, and conquering the leader's jersey this Tuesday. Why also not take advantage of the time gaps after the first mountain stage to break away, gain a big advantage and battle for the win. »
