Tour de Wallonie

Top 5 for Pasqualon, productive day for Hermans

Initially planned in the province of Liège and then canceled, the second stage of the Tour de Wallonie was eventually organized on the racing track of Zolder. The riders had to complete 30 laps of 4 kilometers, making this the shortest stage of the event since the start of the 21st century (excluding time trials). Three intermediate sprints, located after 8, 16 and 24 laps, each granted bonus seconds.

And it is precisely the Belgian Quinten Hermans, 7th in the general classification at the start thanks to the bonus second acquired the day before, who immediately attacked with six other riders in a breakaway attempt, which proved to be successful. Hermans performed well again as he won the first intermediate sprint and finished second in the next, adding another five bonus seconds.

Held around a minute by the peloton, the leading group fell apart and Quinten Hermans’ breakaway ended before the third intermediate sprint. The Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team, united all day around Andrea Pasqualon, was preparing for the expected sprint. The Italian  took fifth place at the finish, with the victory going to Jakobsen (Deceuninck). After a productive day, Quinten Hermans climbs to 5th place overall.

I'm very happy to grab five more bonus seconds today without wasting too much energy. The Tour de Wallonie is often decided for a matter of seconds, as I myself experienced by losing the overall win 3 years ago, for only one second. Knowing that we have a strong team, with riders like Loïc Vliegen and Odd Eiking who have already won on the TRW, I will probably be able to ride a little more on the defensive. We had a strange racing day on this circuit. It's not easy when you're used to competing on open roads, but given the circumstances, everyone is thrilled to being able to race.
