Flanders - Meurisse, 15th, « happy about my day »

Despite an early start in Antwerp at 9h30, there were many candidates for the early breakaway at the Tour of Flanders (1.WT, 18/10)Pieter Vanspeybrouck, Ludwig De Winter and Boy Van Poppel made some attempts, before Danny Van Poppel joined the right breakaway. The advantage of the six leaders fluctuated around 8 minutes for a long time. The gap shrunk fast from the first passage of the Kwaremont, so they were caught on top of the Paterberg with 50 kilometer to the finish. They were replaced by a new trio at the front: Alaphilippe, Van Aert and Van der Poel. Behind, the peloton was reduced to eighteen riders with Xandro Meurisse and Andrea Pasqualon. In the front, Alaphilippe crashed. Behind, Pasqualon lost connection to the group on the penultimate climb, the Kwaremont. Van der Poel beat Van Aert by half a wheel in a sprint between tenors. Meurisse finished 15th, Pasqualon 24th.

Xandro Meurisse :
« My second season half wasn't great, so I felt some pressure to perform well. I was confident and knew that I was able to show something at this Tour of Flanders. We realized a nice collective performance by representing the team with two teammates in the main group of 18 riders. I was really empty for the sprint, but I'm happy about my day. »
