Occitanie (4): Petilli climbs to 16th in GC

Occitanie (4): Petilli climbs to 16th in GC

The peloton used the rather flat first part of the 195 kilometer final stage of the Route d’Occitanie (2.1, 1-4/08) to increase the speed and battle for an early breakaway. Finally, it was a group of eleven riders that managed to make a time gap of maximum 4 minutes. However, the advantage of the leaders decreased quickly during the explosive final, one by one they were overtaken by the chasing peloton. Benoît Cosnefroy showed his skills on the final climb towards the finish line in Rocamadour and won the final stage. The riders of Circus-Wanty Gobert-Tormans reached the finish line collectively, on places 16 (Odd Eiking), 18 (Andrea Pasqualon) and 23 (Simone Petilli). Thanks to this performance, Petilli climbed to 16th place in the final general classification, more than 3 minutes behind overall winner Egan Bernal.

Odd Eiking:

«  The final suited me really well, but I still miss the last couple of percents to be at my very best. I had to sit down in the saddle during the final 100 meters, which proves that I'm missing the punch I usually have. I'm happy about my 16th place, but also a little disappointed about not being able to follow the best. »

« It felt good to pin a number on for the first time this season, and I felt quite ok all week. The level in this French stage race was pretty high, so we're happy about our teamwork and results. But of course we're looking forward to improve them the next races! »

Simone Petilli:

«  The pace was high from the start. The peloton was nervous, because of the wind and the strong composition of the breakaway. We gave our maximum, so we can be satisfied. With Odd and Andrea battling for a result in the stage, I tried to limit the damage for the final classification. The short and explosive final climb didn't suit me, so I'm happy to move up to 16th in the final GC. Hopefully we'll recover well tomorrow before the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge and the Tour de l’Ain. It won't be about the focus! »
